How to compare contractor quotes

Compare work scope, materials, exclusions, schedule, and payment terms before you choose a contractor.

01 / THE READING PATH

Normalize the scope

Two totals are not comparable until the work described is comparable. Read each estimate for the exact task, materials, quantities, and any diagnostic work.

  1. What work is included in each estimate?
  2. Which materials, quantities, and labor are specified?

Read exclusions and terms

An omitted item is not necessarily an exclusion. Ask the contractor to clarify both. The FTC recommends a written estimate that describes the work, materials, completion date, and price.

  1. What is explicitly excluded?
  2. What payment schedule and completion date are written down?

Check before selecting

Use the comparison to prepare questions, then verify credentials, references, and contract terms through the appropriate local channels. BuyerVault does not rank contractors or determine whether a quote is fair.

  1. What would change the price?
  2. Who will document completion and any warranty?
